Narwhal Felties

While I was working at Wolfgang Puck Cafe, I worked with a server, Larry, who knew how to make just about anything out of balloons. And since we worked on Disney property, I saw him make mostly Disney characters. But this on day a girl asked him to make her a Narwhal. It wasn't a spectacular balloon animal (It was just a modified version of the shark or dolphin he already made), but I loved it (and I loved that a little girl knew what a narwhal was!). I was definitely intrigued and I knew I wanted him to make one for Blue and Lion.
Larry was okay with doing it. I just had to pick the colors. It took a long time, but finally the right colors came to me: a purple narwhal with a gold tusk. It truly was a magical looking creature!

It didn't last long (being that it was made out of balloons and Blue played with it outdoors!) and I was a little sad to see it go! But I guess that's the life of a balloon animal.

And I was content to leave my purple narwhal experience there until I made my Pikachu feltie. After I learned how easy it is to make felties, I began searching for other things to make out of felt. And sure enough I quickly found a pattern for narwhal felties and I knew instantly I was going to remake my purple and gold narwhal.

So for my narwhal feltie I decided to use two diferent shades of purple instead of blue and white. (And I actually tried a bunch of different colors for the belly patch before I finally settled on a darker truer purple.)
And what I loved most about this project is that it is really simple and easy to follow. (Now that I've seen more of the website I realize its for kids. But I love the project all the same!)
After I cut out the body shape and the belly patch, I referred back to the website to make sure i was placing the patch in the right spot. (I think this may be the first time I've done that and I honestly don't know why I haven't done it before. I takes all the guess work out!)

And I couldn't find brads in Joanns (and I also was trying to keep Blue out of everything, so I couldn't look as thoroughly as I would have liked either!), so I just settled on a big bag of sequins. I used the giant pink ones for cheeks and eventually, after trying nearly all the colors of sequins I have, settled on a blue and light blue sequins for the eyes.

On the backside of my narwhal I decided to add a pin bar. This way I was easily attach it to a backpack or wherever else I want to place it.

And to finish off my purple narwhal, I made it a gold tusk (or horn as I like to call it). I stuffed it with a little fiberfill and a pipe cleaner to give it a little flexibility. I didn't double check where to place the tusk, so it may not be in the best place. (Blue just thinks its a whale with a party hat, but he doesn't know what a narwhal looks like anyways. So his opinion doesn't matter)

And finally it was time to put both pieces together and stuff it. Or as Blue says 'Fluff it' because he was in charge of this part. And I may have given him too much fiberfill (I didn't think he would put it all in there!) because our narwhal look a little overstuffed. And I tried to work a little into the tail, but that didn't work so well. And eventually I just ended up liking our overstuffed narwhal, so I just closed it up.

And here is the finished project! (Our narwhal or whale with a hat!)
