W is for Whale (or narWhal!)

So for a while now, I've been planning my W page in the activity book to be my weather page. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the weather is simply too big to contain in one activity book page.

So while I was on my months long hiatus from blogging and the activity book, I stumbled upon a whale page. At first I thought it would be great for a z page, but then I found a better idea. So I thought I was going to just scrap the idea all together. Until I finally put two and two together and decided to copy that whale page for my activity book.

The Page

W is for Whale

Supplies Needed:

Basic Sewing Supplies (Straight Pins, Scissors, etc.)

Optional: Buttons

Here's How I Made It

Step 1: Creating the Whale

So when it came to making my whale, I did what I always do. I searched pinterest for whale coloring pages. And sure enough there are a bunch of whale coloring pages. I however decided I wanted a narwhal so I had to be a little more picky with the whale body. Eventually I settled on this whale

I really liked the overall shape and I knew it would be easy to add a horn (tusk!) to, to make it a narwhal.

So I copied that whale pattern onto some purple felt. And after trying several times to use my sewing machine to sew the zipper on, I just ended up hand sewing the zipper into place. I then added a lighter purple button for an eye.

I then sewed around the whales edges and added on the horn.

Step 2: Adding Some Fish

So after I had my whale, i had to make some fish to go with it. I tried hand drawing a fish, but I just couldn't make any fish that I was proud of. So I once again searched for fish coloring pages and while there are better fish coloring pages, I decided to go with this one

I then cut out about 10 fish out for my page.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

After I cut out my fish, I just felt like my page was bare. Originially I had saved a light blue felt piece to use on the bottom to look like the ocean and to have another pocket to store the fish in. But when I tried lining it up on the bottom it just looked too big and it didn't really work. So I decided to cut it up and add some wave ripples around my whale.

I left them open on at least one side, so that the fish would have places to hide!

And then I finished off the page by sewing a 'W' into the bottom left corner and back stitched on 'is for Whale' next to it.
