Z is for Zipper

I knew from the beginning I knew that Z was always going to be a zipper page; I just didn't know how I was going to set up the page. At first I tried making a page with a lot of different zipper pockets, but that was way beyond my skill level. So it ended up being a giant mess of a page.

After that, I just kind of left the idea alone and moved onto other pages and other projects. The fun thing is that while I was searching for project ideas on pinterest I stumbled across the perfect zipper page for my activity book!

Here's How You Do It:

Step 1: Creating the Rainbow

The hardest part of recreating the zipper page was figuring out how to attach the zippers to the page. I tried just about every way possible. I tried using a zipper foot on my sewing machine, but the stitches ended up being too close to the zipper and my zipper pieces didn't lay flat across.

So next I tried using a hem tape. but I over heated the tape on some zippers so they didn't stick to the felt and on some of the others, I guess I placed the tape too close to the teeth and felt got jammed in the zipper. This made the zippers impossible to use.

I even tried using fabric glue... which didn't hold the zippers down that well.

So in the end I just ended up hand sewing the zippers down along the edges.

Step 2: Adding Some Clouds

After all the headaches I went through getting the zippers onto the page, adding the clouds was a breeze. To make my clouds I used some plush felt I had laying around (plain white felt would work just as fine... you might have to double layer it though..) and made two different clouds of it. One that fit into the corner of the page and another that floats near the corner.

And as I was placing my clouds on I trimmed up the zippers along the edges.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

With my clouds in place I added a felt Z and using a couple pieces of felt scraps I back stitched on 'is for Zipper'

And to finish the page I added some blue, silver and white sequins to look like rain drops.
