Cast Iron Skillet Cleaning and Re-Seasoning
To be completely honest, I love that Mike found his old cast iron skillet because it gives me a new genre of recipes to search for and it also gave me a reason to learn how to properly clean one. I know from years of listening to Martha Stewart and other food shows, that you don't clean a cast iron skillet with soap and water. But really that's about it.
Needless to say I put in a quick search on Pinterest and after looking through a couple different posts about it, I realized there really is nothing to it. So I decided to try it out for myself.
The Project
Clean and Reseason the Cast Iron Skillet
Instructions from Life, Love and Thyme
Supplies Needed:
Dirty Cast Iron Skillet
Sink
Stove
Results
Here is how my cast iron skillet started.
Its quite dirty, but nothing it too terribly stuck on. I still gave it a quick rinse in the sink and a little scrub to knock off what I could.
After that, I poured in my 1/2 cup of salt and 1/4 olive oil in the skillet and used a spare wash cloth to start cleaning my skillet
It really is amazing how much dirty it took off with such little effort.
Although I found that 1/2 cup of salt was really too much salt and I kept pushing some over and out of the skillet. So I think next time I'm going to use less of it.
You can see how clean it really got my pan.
And here how it looks after I gave its final oiling.
The best part is that it really takes no time at all to clean! (Even with two kids trying to help you!)
