Here we are with the second edition to my winter crochet series. This week's hat I made Lion and while Blu's hat was a simple beanie and it definitely got me over the hump of making hats, I knew I wanted to do something different for Lion. (And I also wanted to expand my crochet skills along the way). Easily enough I stumbled upon this cute little hat and what I really loved about it was that I knew I had the right yarn to turn it into a darling hat for Lion.

Crochet a Celtic Dream Beanie for Lion

I really love that this pattern offers different pattern sizes. This way I didn't have to try to resize it for Lions head. I did however use the child size pattern because Lion has a big head and the toddler size wouldn't fit it.

I unfortunately don't have a lot of pictures of myself working through the Celtic weave stitch. I do just have on early shot of the hat while I was working on a couple of different projects.

I actually decided to change the hat after this point. I decided to use the dark blue for the brim and the multi blue for the weave.

The hardest part of making this hat was learning how to create the weave like pattern. I started the first couple of a rows a couple different times before I realized that I needed to alternate my stitches. And then I gave it a complete overhaul once I realized it would look a lot better if I made the brim the darker color and used the multi color skein to create the weave.

Here is the hat once I finished the main part of it:

Blue modeled the hat because he was still claiming this hat as his own.

According to the pattern the hat is complete at this point, but I decided to add a couple of extras to really make this hat special. The first was adding a pom pom to the top.

I tried a couple of diy pom pom makers before I decided it was best if I bought a Clover pom pom maker (okay I actually splurged and bought all the different sizes they offer... so look forward a bunch of projects using those!)

I settled on the extra large pom pom maker for Lion's hat.

(I just think there is something really cute about kids hats having a really big pom pom on top!)

I also decided to give this hat a beard.

I once again used some of my inherited Bernat Shantung yarn and followed the beard pattern from Blue's lumberjack hat. After trying it on Lion a couple of times, I finally found the right place to put the beard on and I some what easily sewed it into place.

And here is the finished product:

I can't keep it on Lion for more than a couple seconds right now, but once I'll update with a picture of it!

(And in case you're wondering the hat is a little big for Lion's head, but I just feel like that gives him some room to grow into it.)
