A Crochet Lion for My Lion

Lion's birthday is quickly approaching and since I made Blue a crochet shark stuffy for his birthday, I thought I should do something similar for Lion. And luckily enough when I was searching for the crochet shark pattern, I also stumbled upon a crochet lion pillow pattern. (I think I saved it when I was pregnant with Lion and I had planned to make it for him while I was out on maternity leave with him, but I just never got around to it). Normally I would have been intimidated by the pattern, but after making cacti and the shark, I felt confident that I would be able to make the lion as well!

So over the course of the past two months or so, we've been taking trips to my mom's house, so Mike can work on her house. And I've been using that time to work on my crochet Lion. The first trip I start on the head and body.

I actually forgot my stitch marker at home, so I just ripped off the ends of a q-tip and used that as a stitch marker.

With that stitch marker, I was able to make it through the head, ears and body. I had to wait until we got home to stuff them.

And luckily after I stuffed them, Mike took the boys outside to play, so I could start putting the Lion together. After I attached the head to the neck, I stitched on his face.

And then I added some ears and the mane. (Which I love how easy it is to make and how cute it looks!)

After that I took a little break from the lion, until our next trip to my mom's house. That's when I started work on the four legs and paws for my lion.

For this trip I was able to make it through all four legs and paws, but I still had to wait until we got home to stuff them. (I should have learned the first time to always carry some travel stuffing.)

Luckily for me we had anther trip to see my mom the next week and since, I forgot the crochet hooks I needed, I used that time to start putting on the tail and figure out where I wanted to put the legs on.

I forgot to read the pattern at this point, so I laid my lion on his stomach and attached the legs to his back. (Apparently to attach them properly, you should do the opposite. Lay the lion on his back and attach the legs to his belly.)

In the end, I think the lion looks just as good.

With this legs in place, all I had left to do was put on the paw pads. I tried putting on the big pad first, but every time i finished I didn't think it was centered right.

So I decided to put the four little pads on first and then put the big pads on last. Overall the pads bother me because I couldn't get them to look absolutely perfect, but I keep telling myself, they are good enough.

And while the lion was technically finished, I really wasn't happy with the "bald" spots between his mane pieces. (I'm pretty sure its because I sewed the top mane pieces to close together

So I decided to add more mane pieces to help fill out the mane a bit more.

So here is how my lion turned out!

I still want to add more filler pieces to the mane, but for now the lion's perfect. And apparentl Lion loves it so much he tried to feed the lion some pasta!
