Baking Cherry Pie Hearts
Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Normally Mike and I aren't into Valentine's Day, but this year I stumbled across a cherry pie heart recipe. (I wanted to try it out last year, but just never got around to it). Mike spent part of his childhood on a cherry farm in Michigan and loves anything with cherries. (Seriously he'll eat cherry pie filling on its own). And after I made the cranberry pear pie, Mike requested I make pies more often. In short, this would be a great Valentine's gift for him (and a great Valentine's project to try out for the blog!)

At first I thought about making this all home made, but I quickly realized that there was just too much worked involved. (I'll definitely work out my schedule better to try it that way next year!). Luckily refridgerated pie crust dough is easy enough to find at the store. And with a little luck (and a couple of rerolls later!) I was able to make 16 heart pieces (8 full pies!), with a little leftover for Lion to eat.
I didn't quite know how much filling to put on each heart, so I put about 5 cherries in each heart and then sealed them up. I wish I would have made the slits after I put the heart tops on, but the still turned out nicely. I also just used regular sugar on top.
And then I let the oven do its thing and cook my pies.
Here is how they turned out:
Something happened with my egg wash and the pie crust is a little sour. (Either my eggs or milk are going bad, I'll definitely adjust for next time), but Mike love's the cherry filling part.
