Double Sided Cowl
Last year, I hit up a really good yarn sale at Joann Fabrics. I was able to get enough bulky yarn to crochet a New England Patriots themed braided infinity scarf and I also grabbed some bulky yarn to crochet an Ohio State University themed scarf. I just could never find a pattern I liked and wanted to replicate.
So after a year of searching through various different crochet patterns, I was finally able to find a pattern that I thought would look great in Ohio State colors and would also be fun to make.
The Project
Crochet a Double Sided Cowl
Instructions from Rustic Stitches
Supplies Needed:
4 skeins Grey Yarn
1 skein White Yarn
1 Skein Red Yarn
1 Skein Black Yarn
Results
The original pattern is for the one side of the scarf to be a flannel pattern, but since I wanted to make this an Ohio State themed cowl, I decided to crochet the helmet stripe instead.
The hardest part crocheting the helmet stripe was determining how many rows I needed for each color. Eventually I settled on one black row, two white rows, four red rows, two white rows and finally one more black row.
And because I wanted to add some texture to the gray side, I decided to make the entire cowl using a double crochet stitch.
I created most of the cowl between trips to my mom's house and while waiting in the car line at Blu's school. That's why so many of these pictures involve me crocheting in the car. It really is a easy project to work on in the car.
As I alluded to earlier, for the gray side of the cowl, I wanted to add some texture to it. (This way it wasn't just a plain gray cowl). To make this texture I used a a semi brick stitch. I alternated every four stitches between crocheting the front post and the back posts. At the start of each round, I would just move the pattern over by two stitches.
To put the two sides together, I just placed the gray cowl inside helmet striped cowl and then connected the two with a single crochet stitch.
Here is how it turned out
And here are how both sides turned out.
Overall I'm not very happy with this cowl. I think the idea is still a great idea, I just didn't execute it properly. I should have followed the original pattern by using half double crochets. Perhaps then it wouldn't be so tall. (And I have a long neck, so the fact the its that big on me is a big problem.) I'm also not happy with the proportions of the helmet stripe. It just looks funny to me and the red looks way to big.
The good news is that now that I can see it all together, I can already see what I need to do to make it better! And I can't wait to start working on it. (Especially since we're starting our brief fall/ winter weather days here in Florida.)
