Crocheting A Cabled Beanie
Well here we are nearing the end of December and the end of my winter crochet series. So far I've made a hat for Blue, Lyon and myself... so that only leaves a hat for Mike. I actually just stumbled upon the pattern for Mike's hat. I was searching through Pinterest one day and I just saw a picture of it and I knew that it was the perfect hat for Mike. (It was masculine looking, but still looked like it belong with the rest of my hats.)
The Project
Crochet A Hat for Mike
Pattern from Lugy and Mary YarnWorks
Supplies Needed:
2 Skeins sz 4 Medium Weight Yarn- Main Color (I went with Vanna's Choice Denim Mist)
1 Skein sz 4 Medium Weight Yarn- Accent Color (I went with Big Twist Yarn Gray)
1 Skein Brown Yarn (Optional for Beard)
6mm Crochet Hook (Optional for Beard)
Large Pom Pom Maker (Optional for Pom Pom)
Results
Its a good thing I saved Mike's hat for last because I kept running into problems crocheting it. The first problem I ran into is that I didn't read the pattern correctly, unfortunately I made it this far before I realized it.
The good part was that I realized the hat band was just too large and I decreased the stitch count from 88 to 80. (This is a still a little big for Mike, but it fits a lot better than the original).
I also discovered that if you follow the pattern the hat ends up being really tall. So I took out one of the four row repeats in the beginning.
Once I had the hat finished, I tried it out on Mike to make sure it fit. It fit perfectly and after a little discussion, it was decided that he didn't want a pom pom on top, instead he wanted a beard for it.
To create his beard I followed the same pattern I used for Blue and Lions beards. I however used two yarn strings and a 6 mm crochet hook to create a larger beard for Mike.
Once it was finished I easily attached it to the brim.
Here is how it turned out:
